BILL WILSON - VARIETIES OF SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCE Bill Wilson gave this talk in 1969. The occasion was his 34th Anniversary of Sobriety in Alcoholics Anonymous. Bill gets a huge round of applause after being introduced. Bill speaks for just a short time before introducing Lois. She tells of a talk she gave 17 years ago and that that time Bill had been sober for 17 years and because he had drank for 17 years she considered them “even.” Now he’s got 17 more years. She is obviously very grateful. Bill then begins his own talk by saying that he wants to talk about the “Spiritual Experience” and will share a succession of short stories. Bill tells of many people he knew that said the program is working well but as far as the spiritual connection goes, we just “Isn't got the spiritual angle.” He tells of a young fellow who had been in the program for a few years. He had been having trouble with spirituality. He stood up one day and proclaimed that the radiator in the corner “Is My Higher Power.” Bill goes on to tell several stories of spiritual experiences and then he comes to Dr Bob. He gives a lot of credit to the woman that set up the meeting between them and then he introduces Henrietta Sieberling sitting in the audience. She stands up to a big round of applause. Bill says that when he met Dr Bob, he had found in him, a man that was very spiritual despite his drinking. In Dr Bob’s case his craving for alcohol was not lifted for about 2 ½ years later. Near the end of his talk, Bill says he feels at peace because he is very confident that “The candle of spirituality will be passed on and on, from hand to hand, from one generation to the next.” Inspiring.

Talks about the power of the AA program by telling the story of his own introduction into the program by a non alcoholic Psychiatrist who attended just two meetings during schooling. The effects of this was great and it's benefit reached many people. Another story also highlights the power of a single AA meeting. Talks about the disease Alcoholism. His Sponsor Acceptance Ends the talk by talking about enjoying life. Often humorous and always interesting one of the best talks by Dr. Paul O that I have heard. There is a comment about the size of the audience which is also very enthusiastic. A spirited talk in an electric atmosphere. He doesn't only talk about his drinking and drug use. He talks about the concept of acceptance, and living life in sobriety. He tells some sobriety stories about getting and then living sober. A lot of good practical advice about livening a sober life of recovery.

CLARENCE SNYDER Very Early AA Member ~ Pioneer of AA in Cleveland, OH Sponsee of Dr Bob ~ Spread Early AA to Cleveland At Wilson Social Club, Alexandria, Virginia ~ June 20,1982
14 Tracks 71 Minutes

Clarence's Sobriety Date is February 11,1938 Opens with congratulations for starting new club. Jokes about AA unity; how "riots" spread AA by starting new groups. Talks about his age compared to other early AAs. He got sober at 35 years of age. All the others were 45 plus. He tells his age as 79 at that time which would make the others pretty old.
A very spirited and fast moving talk he tells his own story, talks about all twelve of the steps and how he shares them with others, and tells a good bit of the history of AA. Over an hour long but very interesting. Holds the listeners attention easily. Talks about the Oxford group, and how the break from them was precipitated in response to newly sober Catholics from Cleveland whom he was working with being forbidden from attending a protestant religious meeting. How he caused an uproar by declaring in an Oxford group meeting that the alcoholic contingent would no longer be coming to Akron, and that they would be meeting as Alcoholics Anonymous at a home in Cleveland. Tells "RUMMY STORIES FROM THE BIBLE". Noah definitely was an alcoholic. He talks about his methods of helping people often telling how Dr.Bob (his Sponsor) worked with him. He talks about his experiences in the hospital under Dr. Bobs care. How the 14 Alcoholics who came before him visited him. How he took step three with Dr. Bob. He goes through each of the steps sharing experiences, dispelling errors, and talking about how the steps are properly taken. He talks about "Alcoholics area breed of cats apart from all others". The characteristics of alcoholics and the special abilities of alcoholics. Ends the talk by telling the audience to enjoy life as he does. Very upbeat and spirited even his criticisms are enjoyable.

Bob talks at length about the acute problem that is the alcoholics self voice. "My mind tells me..." ~ He tells of how his mind is like a vulture sitting on his bedpost waiting for him to get up in the morning so it can talk to him. ~Ultimately he winds up helping those of us who identify with this struggle learn to live with ourselves, and understand that what we need to listen to is our higher power and not our negativity prone mind. ~ At the outset of this talk the person introducing BOB asks the audience if it's alright if he goes over the allotted time. They respond enthusiastically that he can. ~ Relates that his mind is the worst enemy he has in sobriety. ~ Explains that there is a difference between the mind and the soul. The mind is constantly trying to lead him in the wrong direction. How within a person there is also a soul which can be led by a spiritual program. ~ Talks about the set of circumstances by which he came into AA. ~ He talks for well over an hour. ~ A very good tape for someone trying to practice rule 62 (Don't take yourself so seriously).

Sam Shoemaker THE HISTORY OF EARLY ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS
at Charlotte, NC June 17, 1962
This talk by Sam Shoemaker begins with a brief history of AA told by Sam. It contains some things which only Rev. Sam Shoemaker could tell correctly. Sam was the preeminent Oxford Group leader in the US at the time Bill Wilson and Ebby T. were affiliated with it. The mission that Ebby was livening and working at during his pivotal meetings with Bill around the time Bill sobered for life was a branch of Sams church. Roland Hazard who had helped Ebby in the Oxford Group principles was a Vestryman at Sams church for a considerable period of time. Sam was very well acquainted with Roland Hazard. Sam was a close personal friend of Bill Wilson. He also was acquainted with the book Varieties of Religious Experience by William James. In this talk he tells what it was about that book which was very relevant to Bill and influential in his getting sober. He talks about Dr. Carl Jung, Roland Hazard, Ebby, the Oxford Group, Bill Wilson and AA from his own perspective. His account is very valuable because he knew these people (except Dr. Jung) and was actively involved in their lives around the periods he refers to. He was an eyewitness to much of AAs earliest history. The rest of the talk is Sams Christian Gospel and Anti Communist message. This was originally recorded in 1962 and Sam was an outspoken foe of communism. This part of the talk does give a sense of the times and an insight into just how challenging a figure Sam was. He obviously got behind things and pushed hard. It's easy to see how he challenged Bill to do all the things spiritually necessary in early recovery. Bill is quoted in his biography PASS IT ON as saying that he owed the Oxford Group a great debt of gratitude" They saved my life." Sam was Bills Oxford Group mentor.

Finally able to recover again he feels himself to be truly part of AA. Though his contributions to AA are substantial and his friendship with Bill W was very close Tom P doesn't mention them. This talk is the best of four recordings that I have. The Tracks on this CD act as Bookmarks. The Tracks start at the beginning of each new story, topic or section of the talk. When first released over a year ago several Iowa AAs were very happy with my extra effort and care. He tells his story; How drinking ruined his life as a successful attorney. How he came into contact with an AA passing through Iowa and got sober. The first meeting of the first group in the history of Iowa AA. About his wife and how alcoholism affects the wives of alcoholics. The first slip, and it's aftermath in the budding group. How the wives helped the men get over the tragedy of the first slip. His work with alcoholics in his "Court Class". Ray Harrison became a judge and probated alcoholic offenders into a program for Alcoholics who didn't or wouldn't fit in with the AA of the time. Many enjoyed great success and he presents this rather humorously. He had their permission to show their mug shot and then a picture taken voluntarily months of sobriety later. An extraordinary man with a fantastic and enjoyable message. Wrote highly collectable AA book CLANCY GOT SOBER Ray was a personal friend of Bill Wilson. Bill even traveled to Iowa to attend the anniversary celebration for Ray in 1948. A very upbeat message delivered to an enthusiastic crowd of AAs. Very Enjoyable Recording ~ Very Good AA History CD

In the talk he uses numerous alliterations. G Group O Of D Drunks G Good O Orderly D Direction He has over a dozen of them and many of them I've never heard before.
Anne Craw of Niles, Ohio January 31,1972 Sober Since 4-1-1948 Anne knew Dr Bob both Drunk and Sober. She talks about it in this recording. She worked in a building in which Dr Bob had his office, and she was an eyewitness to the suffering his alcoholism caused him. She was also helped by him in her early sobriety and recalls his steadfastness and dedication to AA in the final years of his life. She tells her recovery story. How she began drinking, how it progressed, and the bottom she reached. She also talks about living sober, learning to get rid of resentments and how she lived the AA way of life. This is a very well told AA recovery story. Anne C. is quoted in DR BOB AND THE GOOD OLDTIMERS 3 times(one is on page 33). A Very Good Talk by someone who knew Sister Ignatia, Bill Dotson, Bill Wilson and Ethel Macy. This CD was made from a 1970s Era Reel to Reel tape which was probably made by the person who taped the event. The sound quality is very good. The CD is set up so the tracks begin at key points in the talk so important sections can be navigated to with ease

Marty Mann The first woman to get sober in Alcoholics Anonymous tells her story in a 1968 talk at San Francisco, CA. This is the best example of Martys recovery story I have heard. The Sound Quality is very good which is unusual for a 1968 Aa recording. Great recovery CD Historic and Enjoyable. In it she tells her story in considerable detail and talks about living life as a sober alcoholic. Her story is inspiring and her sharing is very informative. She is a recognized expert on alcoholism but she knew allot about sobriety also. During the last part of this recording she talks about sobriety. Her own and that of the countless other alcoholics her fruitful life was intertwined with. She knew Bill and Lois Wilson well and is universally considered an AA pioneer.
One of her best talks this CD is an excellent opportunity to learn more about Alcoholism, sobriety, AA history, and this remarkable woman.

CLARENCE SNYDER formed first AA group in Cleveland, OHIO 1939.
He was sponsored by Dr. Bob, and he tells how Dr. Bob Twelfth stepped him in Akron city Hospital.
This is a very early (1/1/1963) example of a CLARANCE SNYDER talk.
He tells his story and then talks about the steps.
He opens with a very funny drunk joke that I was surprised that I hadn't heard.
Clarence tells his own story. His drinking and how he came in contact with his sponsor Dr. Bob.
He talks about his early sobriety some of which qualifies as AA history. How the Cleveland contingent of the Akron OXFORD GROUP broke away because of it's many Catholic members and the need for a group made up solely of Alcoholics and their families.
He talks about the steps expounding his straightforward and practical approach. This is purely inference but this can be supposed to be the interpretation Dr. Bob shared with him.
Clarence has a confident sureness and direct approach to things. DO IT AND MOVE ON TO THE NEXT THING. DON"T EVADE THE HEART OF THE MATTER. THERE ARE THINGS BEST NOT WATERED DOWN. these are not quotes but they summarize what I gather from Clearances direct approach and unflinching style. I like his style.
Informative, enjoyable and capable of holding a listeners keen interest.
He has an honest and straightforward way of clearing up and expressing his opinion of misconceptions that have crept into the fellowship. ~ A GREAT TALK BY CLARENCE VERY HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT

Bobby C of Philadelphia, PA at 2009 Bellevue, NE Group Anniversary January 31, 2009
Bobby C was a Philadelphia city cop who got sober in Alcoholics Anonymous. He is a storyteller. His AA message is a succession of stories covering various phases of his life both drunk and sober. His life as an active Alcoholic and policeman. His descent into Alcoholism and then at the end Drug Addiction also. His Recovery from Alcoholism and the slow process of being restored to sanity. Crazy experiences in early sobriety. How thru the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous he became relatively happy and sane.

Also Bobby C of Philadelphia, PA at 2009 Bellevue, NE Group Anniversary January 31, 2009. Bobby C has a really good message. Here is a real alcoholic who had all sorts of alcoholic jackpots and adventures but always had a job. His first Alcoholic drinking was after a few of his fellow soldiers were killed in combat. He becomes a Philadelphia police officer after the service and has lots of adventures as a cop who is also a drunk. He finally gets sober and a long recovery process begins. It took along time because he would not follow suggestions and do the steps. After a few years of dry insanity he does the steps. He actually talks about each of the steps and the concludes his talk discussing his life after taking the steps. A really good talk. Some very funny parts.
