The occasion was his 34th Anniversary of Sobriety in Alcoholics Anonymous. Bill gets a huge round of applause after being introduced. Bill speaks for just a short time before introducing Lois. She tells of a talk she gave 17 years ago and that that time Bill had been sober for 17 years and because he had drank for 17 years she considered them “even.” Now he’s got 17 more years. She is obviously very grateful. Bill then begins his own talk by saying that he wants to talk about the “Spiritual Experience” and will share a succession of short stories. Bill tells of many people he knew that said the program is working well but as far as the spiritual connection goes, we just “Isn't got the spiritual angle.” He tells of a young fellow who had been in the program for a few years. He had been having trouble with spirituality. He stood up one day and proclaimed that the radiator in the corner “Is My Higher Power.” Bill goes on to tell several stories of spiritual experiences and then he comes to Dr Bob. He gives a lot of credit to the woman that set up the meeting between them and then he introduces Henrietta Sieberling sitting in the audience. She stands up to a big round of applause. Bill says that when he met Dr Bob, he had found in him, a man that was very spiritual despite his drinking. In Dr Bob’s case his craving for alcohol was not lifted for about 2 ½ years later. Near the end of his talk, Bill says he feels at peace because he is very confident that “The candle of spirituality will be passed on and on, from hand to hand, from one generation to the next.” Inspiring. ]]> Thu, 26 May 2016 12:26:23 -0400 <![CDATA[Dr Bobs Son Smitty + Seacy Willis 2000 Spirit Of Houston -- $6.99]]> Dr Bobs Son Smitty + Seacy Willis 2000 Spirit Of Houston AA Old-timer Searcy who passed away a while back with well over 50 Years of Sobriety, and Dr Bobs Son Smitty at Spirit of Houston November 11, 2000. Finally he ends up physically injured, criminally charged and dangerouslly insane.

His last detox and told to got to AA. He begins coming to AA with contempt but sees they may be onto something.

He doesn't like the people in AA (or anyone else) but feels AA may have the answer to his problem.

Talks about the meaning of the AA symbol. Triangle in Circle.

April-7-1990
Author of the Big Book Story DOCTOR ALCOHOLIC ADDICT(P.439 3rd edition) Dr. Paul's Big Book story is also in the 4th Edition on page 407 and there titled ACCEPTENCE WAS THE ANSWER.
In this talk he tells the audience how the story got written and included in the then new 3rd edition of the Big Book. The editors removal of the word ALANONISM. Tells several very funny stories about ALANON (these are anything but mean spirited; prior to his death several years ago Dr. Paul was an active member and participant in the ALANON program alongside his wife. He was according to the ALANON term a double winner). Talks about the power of the AA program by telling the story of his own introduction into the program by a non alcoholic Psychiatrist who attended just two meetings during schooling. The effects of this was great and it's benefit reached many people. Another story also highlights the power of a single AA meeting. Talks about the disease Alcoholism. His Sponsor Acceptance Ends the talk by talking about enjoying life. Often humorous and always interesting one of the best talks by Dr. Paul O that I have heard. There is a comment about the size of the audience which is also very enthusiastic. A spirited talk in an electric atmosphere. He doesn't only talk about his drinking and drug use. He talks about the concept of acceptance, and living life in sobriety. He tells some sobriety stories about getting and then living sober. A lot of good practical advice about livening a sober life of recovery.

CLARENCE SNYDER Very Early AA Member ~ Pioneer of AA in Cleveland, OH Sponsee of Dr Bob ~ Spread Early AA to Cleveland At Wilson Social Club, Alexandria, Virginia ~ June 20,1982
14 Tracks 71 Minutes

Clarence's Sobriety Date is February 11,1938 Opens with congratulations for starting new club. Jokes about AA unity; how "riots" spread AA by starting new groups. Talks about his age compared to other early AAs. He got sober at 35 years of age. All the others were 45 plus. He tells his age as 79 at that time which would make the others pretty old.
A very spirited and fast moving talk he tells his own story, talks about all twelve of the steps and how he shares them with others, and tells a good bit of the history of AA. Over an hour long but very interesting. Holds the listeners attention easily. Talks about the Oxford group, and how the break from them was precipitated in response to newly sober Catholics from Cleveland whom he was working with being forbidden from attending a protestant religious meeting. How he caused an uproar by declaring in an Oxford group meeting that the alcoholic contingent would no longer be coming to Akron, and that they would be meeting as Alcoholics Anonymous at a home in Cleveland. Tells "RUMMY STORIES FROM THE BIBLE". Noah definitely was an alcoholic. He talks about his methods of helping people often telling how Dr.Bob (his Sponsor) worked with him. He talks about his experiences in the hospital under Dr. Bobs care. How the 14 Alcoholics who came before him visited him. How he took step three with Dr. Bob. He goes through each of the steps sharing experiences, dispelling errors, and talking about how the steps are properly taken. He talks about "Alcoholics area breed of cats apart from all others". The characteristics of alcoholics and the special abilities of alcoholics. Ends the talk by telling the audience to enjoy life as he does. Very upbeat and spirited even his criticisms are enjoyable.

Earl Hightower
of Studio City, CA
14 Tracks 63 Minutes
A Really great topic talk. Earl begins by reading parts of page 84 and 85 of the Big Book which is where Step 10 is discussed.
His talk is really about developing a way of life that is fundamentally different from what he had when active.
He points out that he was a fear driven human being and because of this love tolerance and the way of life described in pages 84 and 85 was alien to him.
He talks about the process of growth that changed him from entirely fear driven and selfish to somewhat loving and helpful.
It began with his sponsor prodding him into his first AA friendship,
and continues to this day with him taking an active part in peoples lives by practicing the steps and participating in AA activities.

They respond enthusiastically that he can. ~ Relates that his mind is the worst enemy he has in sobriety. ~ Explains that there is a difference between the mind and the soul. A Talk About Relationships in Sobriety by Earl Hightower of Studio City, CA
at Sober Vacation February 11, 2005
Earl Hightower is a great topics speaker. A topic talk by Earl is totally different from his story.
He barely mentions stuff he usually talks about and tells all new stories and talks about all new stuff.
He starts out the relationships talk by talking about them in a general way.
He points out that for a long time he thought he had to work on his "picker" that his big problem was not picking the right ones.
In time he found out that to make relationships work he had to work on himself.
He had to work on what kept him from having serene relations with himself, God and others.
He talks about those three areas for the rest of the talk.
Tells things that happened, stuff he did, and what he learned as he improved.
A really good talk lots of "Rule 62" good hearted humour and identification.

<![CDATA[Rev Sam Shoemaker 1962 Early History of AA -- $4.99]]> Rev Sam Shoemaker 1962 Early History of AA

Sam Shoemaker THE HISTORY OF EARLY ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS
at Charlotte, NC June 17, 1962
This talk by Sam Shoemaker begins with a brief history of AA told by Sam. It contains some things which only Rev. Sam Shoemaker could tell correctly. Sam was the preeminent Oxford Group leader in the US at the time Bill Wilson and Ebby T. were affiliated with it. The mission that Ebby was livening and working at during his pivotal meetings with Bill around the time Bill sobered for life was a branch of Sams church. Roland Hazard who had helped Ebby in the Oxford Group principles was a Vestryman at Sams church for a considerable period of time. Sam was very well acquainted with Roland Hazard. Sam was a close personal friend of Bill Wilson. He also was acquainted with the book Varieties of Religious Experience by William James. In this talk he tells what it was about that book which was very relevant to Bill and influential in his getting sober. He talks about Dr. Carl Jung, Roland Hazard, Ebby, the Oxford Group, Bill Wilson and AA from his own perspective. His account is very valuable because he knew these people (except Dr. Jung) and was actively involved in their lives around the periods he refers to. He was an eyewitness to much of AAs earliest history. The rest of the talk is Sams Christian Gospel and Anti Communist message. This was originally recorded in 1962 and Sam was an outspoken foe of communism. This part of the talk does give a sense of the times and an insight into just how challenging a figure Sam was. He obviously got behind things and pushed hard. It's easy to see how he challenged Bill to do all the things spiritually necessary in early recovery. Bill is quoted in his biography PASS IT ON as saying that he owed the Oxford Group a great debt of gratitude" They saved my life." Sam was Bills Oxford Group mentor.

A very good talk by Bill.
Over an hour long Bill tells the whole story of how the Big Book was written and published.
He tells many stories about situations that were disappointing and disasterous which in retrospect are very funny.
Rule 62 at it's best.
Talks about the Rockefeller dinner; the mailing to doctors across the country, and the Gabrial Heater radio broadcast.

"Hit Bottom" but didn't receive help. The importance of the special knowledge possessed by AA to "Hitting Bottom" leading to recovery. The insanity of his drinking after his first hospitalization. His second hospitalization, involvement is Alcoholics Anonymous, and recovery. His relapse, how (why) it happened; the difficulty of recovering again. Finally able to recover again he feels himself to be truly part of AA. Though his contributions to AA are substantial and his friendship with Bill W was very close Tom P doesn't mention them. This talk is the best of four recordings that I have. The Tracks on this CD act as Bookmarks. The Tracks start at the beginning of each new story, topic or section of the talk. When first released over a year ago several Iowa AAs were very happy with my extra effort and care. He tells his story; How drinking ruined his life as a successful attorney. How he came into contact with an AA passing through Iowa and got sober. The first meeting of the first group in the history of Iowa AA. About his wife and how alcoholism affects the wives of alcoholics. The first slip, and it's aftermath in the budding group. How the wives helped the men get over the tragedy of the first slip. His work with alcoholics in his "Court Class". Ray Harrison became a judge and probated alcoholic offenders into a program for Alcoholics who didn't or wouldn't fit in with the AA of the time. Many enjoyed great success and he presents this rather humorously. He had their permission to show their mug shot and then a picture taken voluntarily months of sobriety later. An extraordinary man with a fantastic and enjoyable message. Wrote highly collectable AA book CLANCY GOT SOBER Ray was a personal friend of Bill Wilson. Bill even traveled to Iowa to attend the anniversary celebration for Ray in 1948. A very upbeat message delivered to an enthusiastic crowd of AAs. A Talk by SERENITY SAM on 1 Cd
Serenity Sam M. of Indianapolis, Indiana
April 4, 1985
11 Tracks 53 Minutes

Made from a tape titled THE MURKY ROAD TO HAPPY DESTINY which is a line he says a couple of times toward the end of the talk.
He has a very laid back delivery that is often humorous.
He talks about growing up in an Alcoholic and Criminal family. How he didn't drink because he didn't want to be like them. How he was very mixed up without even having drank yet.
Talks about how he started drinking and how he drank alcoholically from the start.
Allot of really good drunk stories.
How his Dad sobered up in prison and suggested AA to him.
Didn't want to get sober but went anyway and wound up recovering
Talks about the phases of his recovery, friends he has made in recovery, and how he works the AA Program.
Talks about the AA way of life and trudging the road of murky destiny.
The murky thing is part of his humor the talk is very upbeat.
The drunk stories are enjoyed with out maudlin shame, and the mistakes in recovery are gladly past.

A great tape to listen to on the way to an AA meeting or commitment. Not a clown; sort of an AA Will Rodgers. A humorist. Not silly or vulgar. He tells his story and it isn't boring. He has a gift for highlighting humorous aspects of his story especially his alcoholic personality. A very good example of his talks about his alcoholism and recovery from it.

How she began drinking, how it progressed, and the bottom she reached. She also talks about living sober, learning to get rid of resentments and how she lived the AA way of life. Her story is inspiring and her sharing is very informative. She is a recognized expert on alcoholism but she knew allot about sobriety also. During the last part of this recording she talks about sobriety. Her own and that of the countless other alcoholics her fruitful life was intertwined with. 9 Tracks 45 Minutes

AA number 77 on Ann Smiths list of Ohio AA members.
Baseball Player famous for his 1940 newspaper admission of being sober due to Alcoholics Anonymous 29 YEARS SOBER AT TIME OF TALK
Rollie tells his story of drunken episodes and disgusted team managers. Getting fined suspended etc. Talks about trying a cure for his Alcoholism about a year before being introduced to AA.
How at the beginning of the season yet another drunken episode got him sent back to the team headquarters in Cleveland. A very lonely train ride.
The circumstances by which he was introduced to AA.
Hospitalized under Dr Bobs care and visited by the other early AA members.
His early sobriety
Recounts in detail how after a year of sobriety he finally told the inquisitive newspaper men that he was a sober member of Alcoholics Anonymous
Talks about helping others and his life in sobriety.
Very plainspoken without a hint of grandiosity. A very matter of fact description of several events and practices that ore now many years later very historically significant.
I had heard about him in my reading of AA history what this recording taught me was that he achieved over 29 years of quality sobriety by being just another AA member.

At the beginning of this recording someone reads a brief history of the Cosmopolitan Group. It was begun by Dr James Shays author of Big Book Story Jim's STORY p. 483 3rd edition

CLARENCE SNYDER Very Early AA Member

1963 BLACKSTONE RETREAT TALK
Sponsee of Dr Bob ~ Spread Early AA to Cleveland
April 1963 at Blackstone Virginia
19 Tracks 77 Minutes

CLARENCE SNYDER formed first AA group in Cleveland, OHIO 1939.
He was sponsored by Dr. Bob, and he tells how Dr. Bob Twelfth stepped him in Akron city Hospital.
This is a very early (1/1/1963) example of a CLARANCE SNYDER talk.
He tells his story and then talks about the steps.
He opens with a very funny drunk joke that I was surprised that I hadn't heard.
Clarence tells his own story. His drinking and how he came in contact with his sponsor Dr. Bob.
He talks about his early sobriety some of which qualifies as AA history. How the Cleveland contingent of the Akron OXFORD GROUP broke away because of it's many Catholic members and the need for a group made up solely of Alcoholics and their families.
He talks about the steps expounding his straightforward and practical approach. This is purely inference but this can be supposed to be the interpretation Dr. Bob shared with him.
Clarence has a confident sureness and direct approach to things. DO IT AND MOVE ON TO THE NEXT THING. DON"T EVADE THE HEART OF THE MATTER. THERE ARE THINGS BEST NOT WATERED DOWN. these are not quotes but they summarize what I gather from Clearances direct approach and unflinching style. I like his style.
Informative, enjoyable and capable of holding a listeners keen interest.
He has an honest and straightforward way of clearing up and expressing his opinion of misconceptions that have crept into the fellowship. ~ A GREAT TALK BY CLARENCE VERY HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT

John "THE INDIAN"of South Berlin, MA
Source Tape Had No Details of Place or Date
A Very Good Example of Johns Message Best I've Heard

This is a really great AA Talk John tells his story of alcoholism and recovery. ~ Some the things he says are hilariously funny apparently without his trying to be ~ His experiences as a Native American growing up on the reservation. ~ The oldest child many of his siblings perished from tuberculosis; His experiences with the indifference of the authorities of the time. ~ Talks about his drinking and appearing before Judge Dorsey ~ How he got sober and started in recovery Some experiences in recovery and how he stays sober ~A simple uneducated man who prior to getting sober couldn't read and never had a drivers license. He talks with a simple wisdom that is lighthearted, but very helpful. ~

A great CD to have around if you can't get to a meeting but need one. A good mood lifter on a grey day.

He finally got sober in 1946 and remained sober for decades. He talks about the type of person he was before he started drinking. How this made him a natural for Alcoholism His progression into Alcoholism and Insanity Hospitalizations, Shock Treatment, and hitting bottom. Very good explanation of what hitting bottom is. He has a style that really gets to the heart of the matter and he explains complex and often misunderstood things like "hitting Bottom" very well. Overcoming Alcoholism and Drug Addiction ]]>

DEWEY SPIES of Cleveland, Ohio (Moved to California in retirement)
at Cleveland, Ohio ~ October, 29, 1959
12 Tracks 60 Minutes
Though not a talk specifically about AA history Dr Bob and Bill Wilson play a role in his story. He talks about the early members, meetings and pivotal events like Saturday Evening Post article. How AA helped him find the living God which was not the God he was brought up with. He ends his talk with a word about the 12 Traditions and the Bright Future of AA. He was there right after AA started, stayed sober and active in working the program with others, but his message is timeless. It doesn't really seem like he gave this talk over 40 years ago because the AA message of hope is fresh and vibrant.
His last name is not pronouned as it looks; rather it is said SPEES A VERY HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT RECORDING

Bobby C was a Philadelphia city cop who got sober in Alcoholics Anonymous. He is a storyteller. His AA message is a succession of stories covering various phases of his life both drunk and sober. His life as an active Alcoholic and policeman. His descent into Alcoholism and then at the end Drug Addiction also. His Recovery from Alcoholism and the slow process of being restored to sanity. Crazy experiences in early sobriety. How thru the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous he became relatively happy and sane.

Also Bobby C of Philadelphia, PA at 2009 Bellevue, NE Group Anniversary January 31, 2009. Bobby C has a really good message. Here is a real alcoholic who had all sorts of alcoholic jackpots and adventures but always had a job. His first Alcoholic drinking was after a few of his fellow soldiers were killed in combat. He becomes a Philadelphia police officer after the service and has lots of adventures as a cop who is also a drunk. He finally gets sober and a long recovery process begins. It took along time because he would not follow suggestions and do the steps. After a few years of dry insanity he does the steps. He actually talks about each of the steps and the concludes his talk discussing his life after taking the steps. A really good talk. Some very funny parts. ]]>
